About myguide Summer of Travel

  •  Is this program connected in any way to Google?
  •  No, while the idea is inspired by Google Summer of Code TM myguideTravel is in no way connected to Google. We would like to salute the fine work that Google does with the Open Source community.

  • What is myguideTravel Summer of Travel?
  • myguideTravel Summer of TravelTM is a program that offers aspiring travel writers and photographers stipends to travel around Ireland this summer. All we ask for is great content and fantastic images!
 
  • What are the goals of this program?
  • myguideTravel Summer of TravelTM has several goals:
    • Get more destination specific content created and published for the benefit of all tourists to Ireland
    • Inspire travel writers and photographers to begin participating in an Ireland travel community.
    • Provide participants interested in Creative Writing, Photography and related fields the opportunity to carry out work related to their interests this summer.
    • Give participants more exposure to real-world publishing. Your work will be seen by millions of tourists to Ireland.

 

  • Is myguideTravel Summer of Travel a recruiting program?
  • Not really. To be honest, myguideTravel will use the results of the program to help identify potential recruits. But that's not the real focus of this program.

 

  • How many students does myguideTravel expect to take part in the program?
  • 10 participants this summer. We hope to expand this number in subsequent summers.

  • Who is the program aimed at?
  • The program is primarily (but not exclusively) aimed at Graduate Journalists and Photographers.

    Travel Writers:

    myguideTravel are looking  for candidates either with a journalistic background (college newspapers etc), or a background in creative writing, or anyone with a genuine flair for writing and a passion for travel. Applicants will have to submit a 400 word feature on a travel destination anywhere in Ireland, that's articulate, witty and informative.

    Photographers:

    myguideTravel are also looking for talented and dedicated travel photographers to provide inspiring and engaging images of Ireland. Applicants should submit a portfolio of work either online or via email.

  • Your application should include the following:

    Travel Writers :

     Applicants should submit a 400 word feature on a travel destination anywhere in Ireland, that's articulate, witty and informative.

    Photographers :

     Applicants should submit a portfolio of work either online or via email.

  • How many applications can I submit for this summer?
  • One.

Travel

  • Who owns the content produced by students?
  • myguideTravel for the moment. However, we do intend to eventually release the content under the Creative Commons. We have some licience issues to tidy up before that.

 

  • What will I need?
  • It depends on the position you apply for:
    Travel writer positions: A wifi enabled laptop is a must, you will also need a notepad and a pen!
    Photography positions: Any modern digital SLR or equivalent camera. A laptop is preferable too.

 

  • Where will development occur?
  • All development will occur in Ireland at locations determined by myguideTravel.
  • Program Logistics

    •    Accepted applicants will be assigned a region of Ireland on which they will provide their articles and imagery.
    •    All applicants will be offered basic support from myguideTravel in making travel and accommodation arrangements.myguideTravel will not pay for these costs.
    •    Orientation day in the West of Ireland (probably Westport) on Wednesday the 6th June.
    •    Robert Carpenter to co-ordinate with all participants for the duration of the program.
    •    Every participant will submit content weekly.
    •    Every participant will be subject to 3 reviews. Following satisfactory approval they will receive their stipend within 1 week.

Important Dates

  • What is the program timeline?
  • June 6th: myguideTravel summer of Travel will begin on this date and run for a duration of 12 weeks.

Eligibility

  • Are there any age restrictions on participating?
  • Yes. You must be 18 years of age or older by May 28th, 2007 to be eligible to participate in myguideTravel Summer of Travel in 2007.

 

  • Who's eligible to participate as a student in myguide Summer of Travel?
  • in order to participate in the program, you must also be eligible to work in Ireland throughout the duration of the program.

Getting Paid

  • How do payments work?
  • myguideTravel will provide a stipend of $5000 USD per accepted student.
    • myguideTravel will retain $500 USD to aid the costs of flights from US to Ireland and possibly an initial nights accommodation.
    • Students will recieve 3 payments of $1500 USD over the course of the program. These payments will be made within 7 days of June 6th, July 18th and September 12th.
    *Please note that myguideTravel cannot issue any payments until the proper tax-related documentation is submitted.
